Will I Be Able To Breastfeed After Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Q: I had a breast augmentation (implants on top of the muscle) several years ago, and wonder how likely it is that I will be able to breast feed after my baby's birth?
A: It is definitely possible to breastfeed after implants but there are several issues to consider * if the incisions were made around the edge of the nipple some milk ducts and nerve endings may have been cut and this may impede breastfeeding. There are medications that can help in these instances (consult with your doctor) as well as pumping at intervals. But if the incisions were made in the folds or nearer the armpit the milk ducts were probably untouched. * scarring after having implants may make breastfeeding painful and may reduce milk supply. You will need to carefully watch your baby's number of wet diapers, growth, and weight gain to make sure the baby is getting an adequate supply. * the silicone is not ingested through the breastmilk so that is not a concern. Good luck and do not hesitate to talk with your physician or hospital lactation specialist if problems arise. Jane M. Hemminger
