Lortab and Pregnancy

Q: I am five weeks pregnant and I have uterine fibroids. I hurt a lot before I got pregnant, and now that I am pregnant I hurt a little more. I was taking Lortab before I got pregnant and want to know if it is safe to take now that I am pregnant or is it going to hurt the baby?
A: Narcotics have a pretty good safety record in pregnancy; however, there is some risk, and the first trimester is the riskiest in affecting development of your baby. Lortab (hydrocodone) is related to codeine. It is Category C, therefore it shouldn't be used unless you're devastated by the fibroid pain. But that's my cautious statement. If a patient were to come to me having already used it, I wouldn't be in a panic. I'd just use extra ultrasound, which would also be helpful in following your fibroids, which rarely can grow during pregnancy.
