SIDS: Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

Plainly Speaking

Although the cause of SIDS is not fully understood, there are steps that you can take to increase your child's chance of survival. One of the most important things that you can do is to put your baby to sleep on his or her back rather than on the stomach or side.

American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)

The AAP has recommended since 1992 that infants be placed to sleep on their backs to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). This information and more is presented in a brochure which can be obtained from the AAP's website.

The National Institute of Health (NIH): Back to Sleep Campaign

The NIH first teamed up with the AAP to fight SIDS 13 years ago, and since then the number of SIDS deaths in the US has decreased by 50 percent. For recent and up-to-date information, be sure to check out the NIH's Back to Sleep Campaign page.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC)

The CDC offers timely resources, including current SIDS statistics, investigation forms, and information on preventing SIDS on this valuable webpage.

The SIDS Network

This non-profit organization provides up-to-date information as well as peer counseling and support for those who have been touched by the tragedy of SIDS. You'll also find informational brochures, newsletters, educational programs, and additional SIDS information links.

American Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Institute (ASIDSI)

The ASIDSI offers research, clinical services, education, and support to families with young children.
