Your Clever Toddler in Week 98: Understanding Different Perspectives

Week 98 Brain Booster

As a neat way of gauging your child's self-definition skills, try this: Sit across from your toddler and place a doll or teddy bear between the two of you. Say, "Show me the doll's eyes." See what your child does: If she points to the eyes from where she sits, she likely hasn't yet fully grasped that you're looking at the back of the doll's head and that she's looking at the doll's face. If she turns the doll to show you the eyes, she likely understands that your perspective differs from hers—even though she can't even pronounce "perspective" yet!

Self-definition is such an important skill related to social ability. Once children realize that others see from a different perspective, they'll soon realize that people think and speak from a various vantage points as well.
