Q&A: How do I make my own baby food?

My baby is five months old and does not seem to like jarred baby food. How should I make it at home and what all should I give her?

Ask your pediatrician about the order of foods for helpful information on what to feed when.

Making baby food is simple. Steam some of the fresh food until it's soft aand puree it in a blender or food processer. You can make extra and freeze it in ice cube trays. Once the food cubes are frozen, put them into a freezer bag. Each ice cube is one ounce of food. If you make extra, you can combine foods as your baby grows. For meats and poultry , try using lean cuts of each and boil it until cooked. You can freeze it the same way as other foods. By the time your baby is up to meats and poultry, you can combine them with vegetables that she has already had so the texture is more enjoyable.

The best thing about making your own food is that the taste of the food will always be the same for your child (no additives) and you can adjust the texture by not blending as long when the baby gets older.
