Q&A: Can I take Prozac while breastfeeding?

I am taking Prozac and want to breastfeed my baby. Is there any problem with this?

ProzacĀ® and other drugs in the SSRI family have been studied in breastfeeding because they are such commonly used medications, and the news is good! When infants were tested to see how much of the drug was getting through the breast milk and into their bloodstreams, the amounts were "negligible." This means that virtually no drug reached the babies.

Breastfeeding is healthier than formula feeding for the mother and infant. Breast milk provides the perfect nutrition for the baby, plus antibodies to help fight infection. Breastfeeding has benefits over formula feeding for the relationship between Mother and Baby, and for the mother's health as well. The data on Prozac use in breastfeeding are very reassuring, indicating that just like for moms not on Prozac, breastfeeding is probably preferable to formula feeding for you and your baby. Sounds like you are on the right track! Enjoy!
