Q&A: Can I continue breastfeeding through pregnancy?

My daughter is 7 months old and she is still being breastfed. I am 5 weeks pregnant. Is it OK to continue to breastfeed my 7-month-old, and if so, for how long?

It sounds like you would like to continue to nurse at this point, and for most moms, there is no reason not to. Breastfeeding provides the best nutrition for babies, and still offers benefits for your 7-month-old. Plus, the closeness you and your child feel during nursing can be something to treasure as you get ready for an expansion of your family. Many moms nurse throughout pregnancy, while others choose to taper off at some point. Tandem nursing (having two children of different ages breastfeeding) works for some families as well.

While many moms are able to accomplish nursing while pregnant, there are several issues to be considered. If your pregnancy is at risk for preterm birth or if you are having bleeding or other complications, it may be advisable to stop breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor or midwife. If your 7-month-old is still getting much of her nutrition from your milk, it will be important to watch her weight and growth, and to be sure you are gaining enough weight for your pregnancy as well. Be sure to tell your child's doctor and your OB that you are still nursing so they can watch your child and your pregnancy a little extra closely.

Some moms notice that their milk seems different during pregnancy, and many children wean themselves at some point. Health wise, as long as everyone is getting adequate nutrition (you, your child, and your fetus) the benefits of breastfeeding that made you choose it in the first place are still there. Enjoy these days with your 7-month-old, as you ready yourself for the next stage of your family's life.
