Q&A: Is it safe to take Wellbutrin while nursing?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I am taking Wellbutrin (buproprion) for depression (also helped me to quit smoking a year ago). My understanding is that it is not harmful to the baby while I am pregnant, but it is harmful if I choose to breastfeed. Is this correct? Could postpartum depression be more severe if my doctor weans me off of this so I can breastfeed?

Wellbutrin is classified by the FDA as "B." This indicates a generally safe expectation. But it really hasn't been studied in sufficient numbers of patients to be given a final blessing. If you're taking it to quit smoking, smoking is a known danger to your pregnancy and new baby. If you're taking it for depression, it is also indicated. It *is* excreted in breast milk, so as far as after delivery, you should ask your pediatrician.
