10 Reasons the First Year Rocks!
Chubby cheeks, drool-soaked grins, soft coos just for you... Oh, the joys of the first year! Not that you need any more reasons to love your bundle of joy, but just in case, here are 10 things to cherish about your baby's first year.
Chubby Bodies, Soft Skin
Chubby cheeks, chubby fingers, chubby arms, chubby legs, chubby belly—you name it, parents love it on their babies. And super-soft skin makes hugging and touching all those chubby body parts that much more pleasant.
Parents will always remember their baby’s first laugh. And they’ll do anything to hear it again. But who knows what will be the thing to set your baby off in adorable giggles. Sneezing, dancing, even blowing your nose could evoke that belly laugh.
Even before a first laugh, your baby’s first smile is something to cherish. Those adorable smiles—even if they are from gas—is tops on this mom’s list of baby blessings.
It’s no wonder they named delicate little flowers after the smell of a baby’s exhalation. Everyone loves the smell of a new baby. Baby soaps, baby lotions, baby oils, and just the scent of your baby’s milky breath or fresh, clean skin can be great aromatherapy for an overtired, overworked new parent.
Falling Asleep on You
“When they fall asleep in your arms” is one of Ann Travis’ favorite things about babies. “I’m not sure if this is so great because they’re totally adorable with the little pouty lips and angelic chubby faces, or if it’s because they’re finally asleep and not crying,” says the mom of two from Waxhaw, North Carolina. Either way, it seems most parents agree with her, no matter what time of day it is.
In all the excitement of a new family member, parents often forget about the original family members: you and your significant other. Even though having a baby adds another number to the mix, the first months of your new baby’s life can really show you what it was that made you fall in love with your partner in the first place. “Watching your husband with his new child—it makes you fall in love with him all over again,” says Allison Green of Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Going out with your kids will never be easier than it is the first year, even with the humongous diaper bag and other paraphernalia. So whether you use a car seat, front baby carrier, sling, or stroller, take advantage while you can.
Seeing Through Their Eyes
Seeing your baby as she observes birds and trees or the vast blue ocean for the first time (and knowing you were there for those first moments) can give you a newfound appreciation for life you never knew you needed.
No Back Talk
This one may not yet be fully appreciated by parents without older children, but when your precious baby is a wisecracking kid you’ll look back on the nonverbal baby days fondly. Without an ability to express herself in words, your baby won’t protest at whatever outfit you pick out for her. You can take her places without negative comment. And you have the best listener in the world, someone who will soak up everything you say without interrupting (too much).
The Incredible Love You Feel
Whether it’s your first or your fifth, there’s nothing like a new baby in the family to remind you of your never-ending capacity for love. And the magical thing is that this is true for each baby. Somehow, your love grows more than you ever thought it could. It makes you want to be a better parent, a better person. Now that’s a blessing.
