How I've Already Broken My New Year's Resolutions: A Timeline
Well, that didn't take long. On New Year’s Eve, I listed all my New Year's resolutions on my phone's Notes app. I figured if I recorded them on my phone, they would be more official, etched in more than just my mind, encouraging me to hold strong to them. I made a list of several, solid, mostly parenting resolutions. Yep, mama has plans for the coming year. In 2014, I’m going to up my parenting game. ...Or so I thought. You see, as it turns out, my resolve was pretty weak. Yeah, I’ve already broken them. One day into 2014. Here’s how it all went down.
Resolution: I will (try) not to swear (as much).
Jan. 1, 2014, 6 AM
I was still hung over from my New Year’s Eve shenanigans, and she was up at the crack of dawn. Who wouldn’t sit up, stumble out of bed, cry a little, and then shout profanities as you walk into your sweet baby’s nursery?
Resolution: I will not give in to whining.

I was feeling guilty about swearing and shouting. I took her into my bed, gave her my cell phone and her dad’s watch, two things I never let her have, so she would stop whining and I could get a few more minutes of sleep.
Resolution: I will feed my baby organic, whole foods.

I still couldn’t shake my headache, she was still trying to whine so I gave her a Pop Tart. What do you want me to do?
Resolution: I will not use the TV as a babysitter.
Jan. 1, 2014, 9 AM
It’s tough to admit, but I sat baby in front of the TV for 20 minutes while I checked Facebook. I know.
Resolution: I will eat healthier, too.
Jan. 1, 2014, 11 AM
Pop tarts are packaged in twos–she ate one, so I ate the other one. Why do they package them like that?
Resolution: I won't drink as much coffee.
Jan. 1, 2014, 6:45 AM, 7 AM, 8:30 AM and 1 PM
Well, that was just a poorly thought-out resolution.
Resolution: I will not give in to whining (take two).
Jan. 1, 2014, 5 PM
This one is more on my husband than me. But, when I heard the silence and saw her being occupied while I tried to hurry and make New Year’s dinner, I looked the other way. OK, it’s now also on me. Doh!
Resolution: I'll be more firm with her sleeping in her crib.
Jan. 1, 2014, 8 PM
But she was so cuddly and warm and scrumptious, lying there in my shoulder nook as I read her a story. And then she fell asleep. Game over.
Resolution: I will treasure every moment of being a mom.
I will love and treasure every moment with my children, even the hectic ones, despite all my parenting shortcomings. That’s a resolution I will never break.
