When babies coo and babble, we can't help but melt: Making huge efforts to produce such tiny voices is adorable—and helps further Baby's language development. Check out these speech milestones in the first year, as put forth by the American Academy of Pediatrics (unless otherwise noted).

Begins to imitate some sounds.

By 3 months

Vocalize vowel sounds for your 1- to 3-month-old and you might just hear "aaaaaaah," "eh eh eh eh," or "uhh uhh uhh" right back at you. More than just baby sounds, these are the basis for learning language.
