Q&A: Is it normal for an 11-week-old to jerk a lot in his sleep?

My son seems to jerk a lot in his sleep, which causes him to wake up. Why does he do this, and what can I do to help him sleep better? He is 11 weeks old.

The behavior you describe is most likely normal behavior. Young babies have immature muscles and nervous systems. As a consequence, when transitioning from one level of alertness to another (as from sleepy to asleep and during the stages of sleep) involuntary muscle contractions occur. As long as these don't represent seizures (and it is very unlikely for these to happen only during transitions) there is no treatment required. The jerking will stop as the baby’s body matures.
