They Grow Up So Fast: Cherishing the Baby Phase
It's crazy to think that you only really have 12 months to enjoy that precious, scrumptious baby stage. Realizing how quickly this "baby" year goes by, I've been trying to soak it all up. Here are some of the things I've been cherishing.
Those Chubby Baby Cheeks
When I see my baby sitting there, so innocent, looking like a little bear cub with those cheeks hanging down, I don’t even know what to do with myself. So I just sit and stare, and wring my hands in an effort to keep them from pinching and squeezing those CHUBBY YUMMY CHEEKS!
That Heart-Melting Baby Giggle
I never want to forget the sound of my daughter’s baby giggle. It’s the sound of sparkly magic and pure joy. I let it echo in my ears, and I have to catch my breath being overwhelmed by gratitude for my little wonder. Every time she giggles, I melt completely. Like, I’m a melted puddle of mush on the floor.
The Pride in Her Daddy's Eyes
Her father still cannot believe she’s his. No matter what his day has been like, even when the Welsh Rugby Team loses, he walks around with this proud daddy-glow. With his baby girl in his life, nothing can go wrong. I love to see him love her…and change her, and bathe her, and get up in the middle of the night with her…
The Newborn Involuntary Ninja Moves
That newborn phase that happens so quickly is full of “oohing” and “aaahhing” the baby. They are so new to the world, and they are figuring out their bodies. It’s adorable and hilarious to watch the display of martial arts that your brand-new baby will demonstrate when she is too little to have control of her tiny, baby limbs. There’s something so darned cute about all that involuntary stretching and flailing. If you snap enough photos, you can create your own, silent kung fu movie.
The Way They Look When They Sleep
Admire their little eyelids and listen to their breath and the little squeaky noises they make while they are deep in slumber. Appreciate the way she likes to sleep in the “Touchdown” position. Revel in the peace that a sleeping baby creates. Or maybe just revel in the fact that the baby is sleeping. Depends on how tender you’re feeling.
Seeing Her Standing in Her Crib, Waiting for You.
Hearing her calling out for you from inside her crib is already taking cuteness to another level, but seeing her standing in her crib, her little face poking out above the slats, makes you wince in adoration and love of this tiny, adorable person.
That Baby Smell
That sweet, hypnotic baby scent. If you could bottle it, you would. It’s the best type of aromatherapy. Breathing it in from her scalp to her toes gives me an instant, euphoric high. Like a drug. In fact, there has been a study suggesting that moms’ reactions to the smell of babies is like an addict’s reaction to drugs. I’ll admit it right now, I’m a baby-scent addict.
The Way She Looks When She Just Wakes Up
There’s nothing quite as innocent and sweet as that early morning, slightly bewildered, bed-head look. On your baby, not your husband. No, I wouldn’t call the husband’s morning face “sweet”. But that fresh-eyed, pleasant morning time with baby, when she looks as if she’s discovering the world for the first time, yet again, is priceless.
Those Slobbery Baby Kisses
There is nothing better than receiving affection in the form of open-mouth, sloppy kisses from your baby. The sloppier the better.
When She Falls Asleep on You
We all know that baby nap time is valuable get-stuff-done time for parents. When baby sleeps, it gives us baby-free time to tackle work and other responsibilities or to even take some time to relax. But, when my baby daughter falls asleep on me, that pile of things to do becomes less pressing, and I blow it all off to have that moment with my baby.
