Samuel's Birth Story

Friday June 27th was my last day at work before starting maternity leave. We have summer hours on fridays so I only worked until 1:00. At home I was trying to do some cleaning. I had lots of plans of things to do before baby..cook, clean, etc. I was sure he wouldn't come for at least a week(due date was July 2nd..and I thought 1st babies were always late!) I got really tired and decided to take a nap. I woke up at 4:30 with cramps. I thought they were just more bh's. Dh called and asked if he could go out with a friend. I was in pain but said go ahead because I was sure this was just bh's. Dh got home around 8:00. I had been in pain on and off. Around 10:00 it started to really get painful so we started timing...but they were all over the map...some 5 min apart..some 10 min! I still wasn't sure if this was real labor or not. But it was really painful now so we called the dr. to ask what to do. We called 3 times and she never called back! By this time it was after 11:00...I was doubled over in pain and had thrown up so we said lets just go to the hospital. Got there around midnight, they checked me out and said I was 5 cm already!! I was so shocked..half way there already!! Then my water broke. So I asked for my epi right away...the pain was getting unbearable They got me in a room and my dr. finally showed up(she was at a movie and her beeper didn't go off!) I got my epi...much better..I could still feel contractions, but I could deal with them. Dr. checked me out and said I was 9cm already. Then she noticed my bp had shot way up! They gave me magnesium in my IV for that..which made me REALLY hot(side effect they said) I was sweating like a pig. Dr. came back and asked if I felt "pushy"..I didn't really have the "urge" like they say, but said ok. Around 2:00 am started pushing...things were progressing ok...dr. said to "top off my epi" because the head would be out soon! They kicked up the epi....and somehow gave me too much! I went totally numb and all contractions stopped! Dr. was pissed and was yelling at everyone!!! The head was right there so they got out the vaccum extractor. By watching the monitors they told me when to push, but it was really hard because I couldn't feel what they hell I was doing and I was shaking really bad at that point(from the epi also)The dr. got the vaccum on Sam's head and sucked him out finally....it was 3:30 am. Though I didn't know for sure..I thought it was a boy so I wasn't surprised at all when the dr. said it.

I had no episiotomy(as I had asked) and only a small rip. Sam was really cute and pink with a good loud cry! They handed him to me..I put him on my breast and to my surprise he latched right on! We feel so blessed to have our beautiful little boy and love him dearly.
