Alyssa and Tyler's Birth Stories

by Deanne

My husband and I got married on September 11, 1999. I decided that I was ready to start trying soon, so I went off birth control in Feb/99 and to my shock and amazement, I got pregnant in March. My due date was November 17, 2000.

The entire pregnancy was smooth sailing, no complications, nothing! I was 2cm dilated at my last appointment (40 weeks) so my doctor was going to induce me the following Friday (Nov.24) if nothing happened by then. Well, my little angel had other plans. I started having minor cramps around 9:30pm after an hour of brisk winter walking, and phoned my husband at work. He came home immediately and we started timing the contractions. It was nothing to write home about so we went about our everyday routine. I called the hospital around 1:30am and they told me to take a warm bath and call back when they were 5 min apart. Well after I’d had enough of the bath, I got out only to find out that they were getting worse. I told my husband that we were going NOW and that we would call family on the way to the hospital. My mom met us at the hospital at 2:30am and we were admitted. The in-laws came shortly after and I found out that I was 3-4 cm dilated. I did not want an epidural. The pain was intense but not unbearable. I opted for some nitrous gas and that took the edge off the pain. At 6:00am I was completely dilated and had that overwhelming urge to push. At 6:17am, our beautiful baby girl Alyssa was born weighing 7lbs 3oz and 19 ¾ “long. I was in heaven… I had my little princess.

When my princess was 6mos old, I stopped nursing and received my lovely visitor again. About 2mos later, I started to not feel right. Anything I ate did not agree with me and I told my husband that I was going to pick up a HPT on the way home. I took it the next morning and I was dumfounded that I was pregnant again so soon! This pregnancy was extremely different so I knew that it had to be a boy. Well, my due date was April 28, 2002 and I started having minor contractions on April 21. They started around 5:30am, so I went downstairs so my husband and daughter could get a good night’s sleep. I never slept much so I finally got up and had a shower and got everything ready to go to the hospital. At 8:00am I woke my husband up and told him he’d better get up and have his shower before it was too late. I phoned the in-laws to come over and look after our daughter. I was busy getting Alyssa’s breakfast ready and my husband was getting her up and dressed at 9:15am when they arrived. My mother-in-law (bless her heart) was rubbing my back during my contractions while my husband was finishing up. My father-in-law carried the suitcase to the car and we were off. I got to the hospital at 9:30am and was admitted to triage where I scared the nurse to no end. I was already breathing heavy like I was ready to push. She asked if this was my first and I told her no and then she asked my husband (I was getting into the lovely hospital gown) if I had a fast labour before (YES). She checked me and I was 8cm dilated and they rushed around to prepare a room and to find the doctor. I was transferred to an L&D suite where they had to do everything FAST. I was complete at 10:00am and at 10:09am our precious baby boy Tyler was born weighing 8lbs 1oz and 20”long. My poor husband’s hands will never be the same after I squeezed the life out of them during both deliveries.

I had fabulous pre-natal care and both of my OB-GYNs let me deliver lying on my side with my leg on their shoulder. I am very lucky to have the wonderful family that I have and maybe there will be more love to add in the future, who knows!
