Breanna's Birth Story
When I discovered I was pregnant with our third baby when my second was just seven months, I was shocked and surprised. I even cried. I knew I would want a third; I just didn’t expect it that soon. My due date was on January 19 and I had a conference on January 25. I really wanted this baby early, or really late. I got neither. I was six days overdue when she arrived quickly.
I ended up in the hospital early January with the flu and contractions but was sent home after some IV fluids. Contractions continued on and off for three weeks, sometimes eight minutes apart for three hours, but then they would fade away. This happened daily.
On January 24, I went to the hospital with contractions that were four minutes apart, but I was sent home when they slowed down. My cervix didn’t change and my baby’s head was still high. I was instructed to come back when contractions were seven minutes apart for an hour.
Contractions continued that evening and were moderately painful but never regular, even though some were really hurting. I had so much recovery time and could still talk through them. I didn’t think it was any different than the other nights we timed contractions.
I went to bed at 11 PM. Contractions were still only about 10 or 11 minutes apart but they were getting very painful. There was one really big one where I had to get out of bed to concentrate, and it was so strong I said, “I think we need to go to the hospital.” There was so much pressure, as if something had pushed in that private area and when I went to the bathroom and found blood, I told my husband to call his mom because we needed to get to the hospital.
My husband called his mom and hurried to get dressed. I tried to gather things and said we needed to go now. He started the van and we waited for his mom. I said, “Call your mom; find out how far away she is! We need to go now! This baby is coming!” Contractions were so close and the pain was so immense I really thought I was going to have the baby in the van. We saw his mom pull down the street and we took off.
It was like a scene from a movie. I was howling from the pain and I thought this baby was coming right then. I kept telling my husband not to speed. He put on the flashers and drove as fast as he could. The contractions were so painful I couldn’t help but yell and howl through the pain. I never thought I would be like those women you see on TV, acting as they do during birth, but that is what I felt like.
When we arrived at the birthing center, my husband grabbed the outside phone and I banged on the window because the center was locked after hours. People came running. Once inside, the pain was so bad, one nurse yelled that she was getting a wheelchair. I yelled, “I can’t sit right now! I don’t want to sit!” Then it felt like so many people were running around to help.
In the birth room, they stripped my clothes and told me to lie on the bed. I said I couldn’t lie down but then I did. A nurse checked me and said I was fully dilated and the head was right there and the baby was coming.
I said, “No,” because this was not how I wanted to do it. The nurse told me not to push. It was like she was keeping her hand there and holding the head so it didn’t come out. She said to wait for the doctor. I remember saying I needed to push because it hurt. The next thing I knew the doctor was there and the nurse said I could push and I remember telling her that I didn’t want to push! The doctor said, “OK, don’t push. This baby is coming on its own.” It wasn’t long after that that we welcomed a new baby girl, who weighed seven pounds, five ounces, and was 20½ inches long. The water bag was intact and the doctor had to cut it as she was coming out. They told us if the water would have broken at home, we probably would have had the baby at home! We got to the room at 12:40 AM and Breanna was born at 12:46 AM. We had to wait for the doctor because he was just finishing a delivery at 12:43! Since Breanna arrived on the day my conference was to start, I ended missing it but there was no place I would have rather been than with my baby girl!
