Camryn's Birth Story
I had a very easy pregnancy up until I was hospitalized for a week and was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I was very afraid of needles but was quick to learn that it was vital I give myself four insulin shots a day as well as follow a strict diet.
I was induced at 2:10 p.m. on my due date and went immediately into a hard back labor. My poor husband was there all the way through with me. I felt the baby start to push out on her own at 10:00 p.m., and even though I begged, my doctor didn’t give me any drugs because he knew I wouldn’t have felt anything, which would have prevented me from pushing my baby out. While I was upset at the time, I agree now that he made the right decision not to give me pain killers.
The baby’s head was difficult to push out so my doctor cut me a little. Then he cut a little more. We had no idea the our baby was going to be so big–we suspected around nine or ten pounds. Her shoulders were not coming out and I didn’t realize it but I was lifting my husband off the floor from pushing so hard. My doctor cut me some more and reached in; finally, at 2:50 a.m. Camryn was born. What a relief! I gave birth completely naturally, and what I thought was a couple of cuts to help me get my daughter out ended up being 32 stitches! Would I ever heal?
Right after Camryn was born, I was shocked because her little arms weren’t moving. The doctor said it was nerve damage from not being able to pass by my pelvic bone. Fifteen minutes later she moved! They cleaned her up and weighed her three times. I almost passed out when they told me she weighed 11 pounds, 11 ounces (And ironically, she was born on August 11th).
I bled badly, and I received four pints of blood before I was allowed to go home, yet I still didn’t feel well. I was so weak that I had a hard time feeding her and was barely strong enough to hold her for that first week. My hemoglobin level was a five instead of a 17 as it normally should have been.
Camryn is five months old now and I am healed. I am no longer diabetic and she lost all of the water weight she gained the last months I was pregnant. Camryn is healthy and happy. I still cannot believe I delivered a 12-pound baby without pain killers!
