Emma's Birth Story

by Maureen

Emma's birth story is truly amazing. I had had a very difficult delivery with my first child, following twenty-six hours of labor. I was quite frightened when I found out I was pregnant again.

As my pregnancy progressed, I decided to seek the help of a hypnotherapist in order to relax and prepare for the delivery. He helped me envision a better birth with less medical intervention helping me to prepare in so many ways. I also read a book called Mind Over Labor by Carl Jones. I practiced the meditations over and over. I pictured myself dilating without medication.

The morning of Emma's birth I woke up at 4:00 a.m. I knew I was in labor and tried to wake my husband. He was sound asleep, so I finished preparing my bag and took a quick bath. After that, I called the doctor because my contractions were already three minutes apart! She said to come right to the hospital. I got my husband up and told him we had to go right away. By this time I was in a lot of pain. We rushed to the hospital and the nurse checked me. I was already nine centimeters dilated and very shocked that it was happening so quickly.

They set me up and the doctor came in, broke my water and told me to begin to push. Emma was born at 6:17 a.m. after only two hours of labor. Of course I didn't have any medication because it was too late.

Emma was absolutely perfect at eight pounds, six ounces and twenty-one inches long. She was pink and lovely! My husband and I were overwhelmed with joy that everything had gone so well, especially because I had had such a difficult time with our first born.
