At about 12 weeks, I found out my husband and I were expecting twins! Everything went fine until I was at 20 weeks. My OB wanted me to stay off my feet, and ordered home bed rest for me. I thought it would be a treat. Lay in bed all day, everyday! Boy was I wrong!
At 25 weeks, one day after Christmas, I went in for a regular exam and discovered I was dilated. My OB immediately admitted me into the hospital for strict bed rest. This hospital didn’t have a NICU, so I could only stay as long as delivery was not imminent. My husband and I celebrated New Years in the hospital!
Towards the end, I had to be on a magnesium drip, which never really helped. I was one day away from the big 30 week mark when I broke into full-fledged labor. There was barely enough time for my husband and Mom to get to the hospital. I had an emergency C-section at about 2:00 p.m. on February 1, 2002, and our two beautiful boys were born!
Jacob Michael weighed 3lbs 4oz, and Joshua Richard weighed 3lbs 5oz. They were immediately incubated and warmed. We got to touch their tiny feet for a few seconds, then they were whisked away to the NICU.
Every day was different. One day they seemed to be doing better and gaining weight, the next one of them would be jaundiced again. They both ended up getting a urinary tract infection and got pretty sick from it. Ups and downs, ups and downs. We were exhausted from the worrying, and couldn’t wait to get them home. They finally did come home after five extremely long weeks.
They are now 10 months old, and healthy. They have absolutely no problems, and are the happiest boys in the world.
