My husband and I had some difficulty conceiving and decided to try in-vitro fertilization. I conceived on our first attempt, but lost the baby within a few weeks of getting a positive result. We didn't give up, and on our second attempt, were blessed with the news that we were expecting twins.
During my pregnancy I was required to have ultrasounds every four weeks. I was scheduled to deliver by C-section on December 26. During my last appointment with the doctor performing the ultrasounds, one week before my scheduled delivery, we learned that Baby A had not grown or gained any weight since the last appointment. I was immediately sent for a non-stress test and began having contractions. Of course, I was rushed to Labor and Delivery and admitted, my doctor deciding to go ahead and take the babies there and then. I was only 34 weeks and 6 days into my pregnancy.
Fear overwhelmed me because I wasn't sure if Baby A was okay or even strong enough to survive. Obviously at that gestational age, chances were great, but there's always a lingering question.
They were both immediately taken to the Special Care nursery. Cara was on oxygen until the next morning. Of course, they had to stay until they both took their entire bottle before they could go home. Cara came home on January 3, 2002 and Sage came home on January 5, 2002.
