Kate Hudson Predicts Baby’s Gender with an Age-Old Trick

Boy or girl for Kate Hudson? The actress puts a popular gender predictor method to the test.

Free-spirited actress Kate Hudson gave the baby gender prediction game a try in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. Already a mom to son Ryder, born January 2004, Hudson is due sometime this summer with baby #2—and readily admits to not knowing for sure whether she is having a boy or girl. But the pendulum might be swinging in favor of a girl, according to a "pendulum test" Hudson performed while chatting with ET correspondent Samantha Harris.

For those not in the know, a pendulum test or "pendulum reading" is when you hang a ring over the pregnant belly by a string, or in Hudson's case, a piece of her hair. The practice is said to reveal the gender of an unborn baby by interpreting the hovering object's pattern of movement. If the ring spins in a circle, it is a girl. If the ring swings back and forth, it is a boy. Hudson says she performed the reading with her previous pregnancy, and it successfully predicted her son Ryder's gender.

During the interview, the ring spun in a circle, meaning it's a girl (maybe) for Hudson, who called the test, "very witchy."

OK, so we all know that the only truly accurate way to tell the gender of your unborn child is through ultrasound or amniocentesis. But want to have some fun? According to folklore and plenty of old wives' tales, you can deduce your baby's gender with such low-tech methods as:

• Looking in the mirror: If you're carrying Baby low in your belly, it's a boy; high, it's a girl. If you belly sticks straight out, it's a boy; if you're wide at the middle, it's a girl.
• Monitoring morning sickness: If morning sickness lasts morning, noon, and night, it's a girl.
• Listening carefully to the heart doppler: Is Baby's heart beat faster than 140 beats per minute (bpm)? It's a girl. Less than 130 bpm? It's a boy.
• Checking the lunar calendar: Crossing your age with the month your baby was conceived, many women claim the Chinese Lunar Calendar method accurately predicts gender. Will it work for you?

While it's probably not a good idea to base your choice of nursery decor on any one of these gender prediction methods, remember you always have a 50-50 chance of being correct! Time will tell whether Hudson's ring test was correct. Stay tuned...
