Adoption Costs
The Internet can cut some adoption costs -- such as mailing forms and saving money on long-distance phone calls, but adoption is still an investment. Domestic adoptions handled through public agencies costs anywhere from $0 to $2,500 (most of these adoptions are for children with special needs). Domestic private and independent adoptions run from $4,000 to $30,000 and up. Foreign adoptions can cost even more starting at $7,000 and going up to $25,000 and this doesn't factor in costs for traveling to pick up the child. There is some relief: You may qualify for up to $10,000 in tax breaks, depending on your circumstances. (Visit the IRS website to learn more.)
You can review each agency's costs online. A word of caution, just because an agency is pricier than another doesn't mean it will be better, while comparatively inexpensive agencies may not explain all of the costs upfront. After doing your research online, expect to do a thorough interview of the agency over the phone or in person before signing up and paying any fees.
