Q&A: Can teenage pregnancy hurt fertility later in life?

I am 20 years old and had my daughter when I was 14 years old. Since then, I have been unable to become pregnant again. Do you think that having my daughter so young might have thrown off my body or something? My husband and I have now been trying for two years. I have really heavy and painful periods, which have always been like clock work. Then, this past year they have been very irregular. I missed three months in a row. I have no idea what is going on? Can you help me?

There is no evidence to suggest that having a pregnancy or a child or at an early age will effect your ability to become pregnant. At age 20 and trying for two years, there may be something wrong as the vast majority of women your age will have conceived in that time. By your history of painful periods, I think it is possible you might have a problem called endometriosis, which can decrease fertility. Your recent lack of periods also discloses that you are not ovulating or not ovulating regularly. I would highly recommend that you see a reproductive endocrinologist to have a thorough evaluation.
