Q&A: Should I be worried about conceiving after cervical cancer?

I was diagnosed with cervical cancer last fall, when I had an extensive cone biopsy done to remove cancerous cells. Unfortunately there are still pre-cancerous cells existing.

My OB-GYN has given me the all clear to start trying if I want children, but she has also told me that the previous cancer cells were aggressive, and the current pre-cancerous cells are likely to become cancerous within a year or two, leaving me a one to two-year window in which to conceive a child.

Physically now is the time; I do not doubt the reasoning behind it. Emotionally, I'm not sure if I am ready. I´m scared to death. I feel like I´m being put under enormous pressure and have been given a now or never ultimatum.

I'm a little troubled by the remaining pre-cancerous cells you mention. Ask your healthcare provider to refer you to a gynecologic oncologist to get an opinion on your condition before trying to conceive. Then, only try to conceive if you're emotionally ready.

I don't think it's a now or never thing. This should be determined by your doctor after receiving the GYN oncologist´s input.

Normally I'd say to just go with your doctor on this, but you are obviously distressed about the situation. It sounds like you need more information about your condition before you make any decisions.
