Q&A: Is it normal for my HCG level to quadruple in two days?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I have recently received two lab results reflecting my HCG levels: One was 90, two days later was 401! I am obviously very early in pregnancy and have lost a baby a few months ago so I am concerned. I know the numbers are supposed to double every 48 hours, but should I worry if they quadruple?

It's possible that a normal pregnancy can do this, but you'll certainly have an ultrasound when the HCG level hits 1500 (or sooner) to rule out twins or even possibly a "molar" pregnancy.
