Q&A: Should I worry about low sperm count?

My husband and I are trying to conceive. It has been five months since I stopped taking birth control and we are not pregnant yet! Concerned, I ordered a semen analysis. The results were confusing but came back with a "low sperm count." Should I be concerned or is it too early to worry?

It's too early to worry. If the results were confusing, make an appointment with your doctor to help explain them. In the meantime, keep trying. It can sometimes take up to a year for perfectly fertile couples to conceive.

You should also have him repeat the test one or two times before making any conclusions. There is a tremendous amount of variability in sperm counts from sample to sample. Even perfectly fertile men can occasionally have a semen analysis with low sperm counts. If he has persistently low numbers, then some additional evaluation for him may be indicated.
