Q&A: I want to know how often I will need a Rhogam shot since my blood type is Rh negative.

by Marie O'Sullivan, RN

I have had two miscarriages since April of last year. After my last D&C I found out that my blood type is Rh Negative. I received a Rhogam shot in August, and saw a gynecologist in October.

I was wondering how often I will need this shot during pregnancy? I plan to wait a few months before trying again so my body can heal.

Rhogam is given to Rh-negative women who miscarry to protect them from making antibodies to Rh-positive blood (the baby you miscarried may have had Rh-positive blood). This precaution is used in case the next baby conceived is Rh-positive.

You will only need the Rhogam shot again if you deliver an Rh-positive baby (to protect future pregnancies) or in the unfortunate event that you miscarry again. I hope this helps you.
