Q&A: How long should I wait before seeking fertility help?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I have been trying without success to get pregnant for three months. I know three months isn't considered that long, but how long is it reasonable to wait before becoming concerned about infertility?

It depends on your age. If you are under 30 and your cycles are regular, give it six months before requesting an infertility investigation. If you're over 30, ask for a conference now with your doctor to see if he or she feels, based on an initial appraisal, that you need to be on a faster track. If your cycles are irregular, make an appointment now to solve that problem, which is a prerequisite to trying to get pregnant.
