Q&A: Should I dispose of my husband's stored semen sample?

My husband had Hodgkin's Disease seven years ago. He had his semen stored prior to beginning chemotherapy, upon his doctor's advice. He was 19 at the time and is now 26. We are planning on trying to conceive soon. He had a semen analyis done last month to see if we could dispose of the stored sperm. Based on the analysis results, we were wondering if the results fall into the normal range, particularly the motility results. How comfortable do you feel with 60 percent? The analysis results were as follows: Appearance—White; Volume—3.5 mL; Motility—60 percent progressive; Concentration—97.6 mil/mL; and Normal Morphology—90 percent.

The World Health Organization's (WHO) criteria for a normal semen analysis are as follows:

Volume: 2.0 mL or higher
Concentration: 20 million sperm per mL or higher
Motility: 50 percent or higher
Progressive motility: 25 percent or higher
Normal Morphology: 305 or higher
