Q&A: How do you calculate your potential ovulation date?

I was told that you can find your ovulation date by counting 14 days from the first day of your last menstral cycle, then counting an additional two days before and two days after. Is it true that you should ovulate within this time (between days 12 and 16 of your cycle)? I just stopped taking birth control two months ago and my cycle is not yet regular.

The only equation that is valid in calculating your ovulation is to subtract 14 days from the beginning of your next period, meaning you will always be determining when you have ovulated, not when you will ovulate. This is only valid in arrears, since the one constant in regular cycles is the second half of the cycle. So, the most fertile time of your cycle is actually six days before ovulation through the day of ovulation.
