For couples considering in-vitro fertilization, it's important to know how much the infertility treatment is going to cost them.

Have $24,000 to spare? That's the typical amount couples pay who pursue IVF treatments, according to a study on fertility assistance costs from the University of California, San Francisco. Published December 6, 2010, in an online edition of Fertility and Sterility, the UCSF research team looked at median costs of different types of fertility treatments in the US. Their results showed median per-person fertility costs ranged from $1,182 for ovulation-inducing medications only to $24,373 for IVF without donor eggs and $38,015 for IVF using donor eggs.

But before you start budgeting your savings, when it came to IVF, researchers found one major catch: The $24,000 price tag represents the median cost of IVF for anyone who seeks treatment—it does not take into account whether or not IVF resulted in a pregnancy. When the research team went back and calculated costs for successful IVF treatments (one resulting in a baby), the median cost jumped to $61,377.
