The Surrogacy Experience: Pregnancy (Part 2 of 3)

"I thought it was going to be so different," shares Kelly, whose last labor experience was scary due to the prematurity of her baby. "Our doctor is phenomenal—he had her very comfortable, and she was relaxed and calm."

Karen delivered that night, on March 22, 2007. Dege and Kelly were in the room, as was Tom. "They draped my legs to give me some privacy, and Dege and Kelly stayed up near my head. Each one got to cut a cord," says Karen.

Tom says that the whole delivery was amazing. "It was such a different perspective from having my kids. It wasn't my attachment; it was Kelly and Dege's attachment. It was great to see them light up and the way it changed their lives."

The girl-boy twins, Callie and Talen, were born at 35 weeks, five days. Each weighed five pounds, three ounces.

Seeing the twins for the first time was unbelievable, says Kelly. "We just were amazed that this was our baby, and then, wait, here's our other baby!"

There were no complications for the Holmeses giving the twins over to the Russells. "Everybody asked about Karen giving us our children after the birth. I have known Karen and Tom for too long to even worry about it," says Dege. "Our children will be just as much a part of their family as our family."
