The Surrogacy Experience: Pregnancy (Part 2 of 3)

Every time Karen had a doctor's appointment, Kelly went, too. She only missed one (when she had pneumonia). Dege came to most of the appointments as well. "They were there every step of the way," says Karen. Kelly's doctor cared for Karen during the pregnancy.

There were a few scares along the way. Early on, right after having found out that they were having twins, Karen started to bleed while at the mall. "We were both frantic," says Kelly. They went to the doctor, and the tech didn't know how to use the ultrasound machine very well. "At first she couldn't find one of the babies, but then she found it," says Kelly.

There were several other instances of bleeding which all turned out not to be serious, but each incident was scary because of Kelly pregnancy history. "We were so excited but so nervous," shares Kelly. Karen was put on bedrest in January because she was carrying multiples, but otherwise her pregnancy went very smoothly.

Nervousness and anticipation mixed as the day grew closer. On March 21, 2007, Karen had a routine doctor's appointment. After the non-stress test and the sonogram, they sent her over to the hospital. "I didn't think to ask why they were sending me there!" laughs Karen. She was contracting a bit on her own, but they started pitocin to get things rolling. Karen says it was the easiest and most painless labor and delivery she's had; she's still surprised.
