Q&A: Does having a high prolactin level mean that I will not ovulate?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

Does having a high prolactin level mean that I will not ovulate? How do I know if I still have eggs left? Shouldn't this be a standard test done with someone who is having trouble getting pregnant?

A high prolactin level is the reason why breastfeeding women are unlikely to get pregnant, so yes, it can interfere with normal ovulation. More importantly, it can also point to an abnormality of the pituitary gland and even to the possible existence of benign tumors that can be treated. So if you haven't been evaluated for this with a CT scan or an MRI, you need to ask your doctor.
