Q&A: Do I have an irregular cycle or could I be pregnant?

by Marie O'Sullivan, RN

I was on the birth control pill for four years until last month, when my husband and I decided to start trying to conceive. According to my cycle, my period was due at the beginning of this past week, but it has not started yet. I have felt nauseous, tired, and have sore nipples, so I thought perhaps I might be pregnant. I took a test, but it came out negative. Am I just experiencing an irregular cycle?

After stopping birth control pills it usually takes a few cycles before you are back to a regular cycle. If you do not get your period in the next few days, I would suggest trying another home pregnancy test. Or contact your OB to do a blood pregnancy test (which is the most accurate).
