Q&A: Why do I have so much sticky cervical mucus?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I am trying to conceive and my OB-GYN recently checked my prolactin and progesterone levels. My prolactin is fine, but my progesterone is at level 4.2, which she said is low. She wants us to try to conceive on our own for three more months. We have been trying to conceive every two to three days. I am also using an ovulation predictor kit (OPK), but since my cycles range anywhere from 19 to 45 days, ovulation is hard to predict. I am also checking my cervical mucus regularly.

Last weekend my luteinizing hormone (LH) surged, but my cervical mucus (CM) was still white and sticky. However, after my husband and I last had intercourse, I noticed about two to three tablespoons of a white, sticky CM. A nurse said that it was probably pre-ovulation CM that had been "pushed" out, and that I would probably ovulate in the next 24 to 36 hours. But then why is it that today (a week later) I still have CM that is white and sticky? What's going on?

The most fertile time for conception is six days before ovulation until ovulation. And intercourse every day is recommended. Your main problem is probably an inadequate corpus luteal phase. This means that you may not be ovulating well. Clomid is used sometimes in cases like this, but I think your doctor is wise to have you conceive on your own if you can, without all of the manipulation. But once that time limit is past, you should definitely look at all of your fertility options.
