Q&A: I have tender breasts and light cramping. Could I be pregnant?

by Marie O'Sullivan, RN

The start date of my last period was on 1/2/2002 and my husband and I knew when I was ovulating. We are trying to have a baby and took extra measures to use that time. As of late I have had very tender breasts around the nipple area and have had very light cramping, on and off. I have taken HPT's and they have come up negative. I have not started my period. Could I be pregnant?

Dear Heather,
It may be too early for a HPT to show positive. Most are accurate from the day you miss your period. As difficult as it seems, wait another week and retake the HPT. If it is negative and your don't get your period when you should, call your OB to schedule a blood pregnancy test. Good luck. Jenine O'Sullivan RN
