Termination of the pregnancy before the fetus is able to survive outside the womb. In the U.S. this age is arbitrarily taken to be 20 weeks gestation, although no infant less than 22 weeks has been reported to survive after delivery. Abortion may be either spontaneous (also called miscarriage) or induced.
