WHAMThe placenta and associated membranes passed from the uterus after birth of the child. The placenta usually follows shortly after the baby. However, if it does not come on its own the doctor may have to remove it by other means, as complications may arise if it is not expelled. The fetal membranes—the chorion is the outer one and the amnion is the inner one—envelope the embryo and contain the amniotic fluid.
