The area of development pertaining to higher brain functions: awareness, recognition, perception, reasoning, judgement, as opposed to social-emotional and physical development. Children develop their cognitive ability over the first two decades of life. The ability to think about abstract concepts does not usually appear until about 6-7 years of age.
