Technically, this is any crampy, sharp abdominal pain caused by intestinal contractions. It is a term used to describe the behavior of otherwise healthy infants who exhibit at least three hours of crying per day, most days of the week. The crying usually occurs late in the day. Colic begins between three and six weeks of life, and disappears at three to four months. It is considered more of a behavioral/temperament phenomenon than a physical one.
