A viral infection, causing inflammation and narrowing of the upper airway. Symptoms include fever, fatigue, a harsh, barking cough (often worse at night) and a noisy sound upon inspiration called stridor. Most affected children are between 1 and 3 years of age. Croup can range from very mild to life-threatening.
