Fetal distress

Problems with the unborn child during labor. Sometimes during labor and delivery the fetus may not get enough oxygen from the placenta and may become "distressed". When this happens, the fetal heart rate may show patterns consistent with oxygen deprivation. These patterns can been seen on the fetal heart rate monitor. They alert the obstetrician that further investigation or intervention is needed to assure the fetus' well-being.
