Engorgement

Swelling and tenderness of the breasts resulting from excess fullness with milk. Usually this occurs about 3-5 days after delivery. Some things that may help to prevent engorgement are feeding your baby more often (8-10 times a day), massaging your breasts gently prior to and during breastfeeding, using an electric breast pump if your baby does not completely empty your breast during feeding, avoiding bottles and pacifiers that may reduce your baby's nursing vigor. To relieve the pain of engorgement, take a hot shower or apply warm, wet cloths to your breasts 15-20 minutes before pumping or feeding.
