Effects of maternal alcohol consumption on the unborn child. FAE represents less pronounced findings than those seen from more extensive alcohol exposure, which produces the fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) . FAE is also known as FASD or fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. It is still unclear if there is any ‘safe’ amount of alcohol a woman can ingest without harm to her unborn child. Other factors, such as the health of the woman and the genetic make-up of the child, can improve or worsen the risk. For this reason, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists recommends no alcohol just before, or during pregnancy.
DO NOT DRINK DURING OR JUST BEFORE PREGNANCY.
