A constellation of findings representing damage to an unborn child as a direct result of alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Consuming more than three ounces daily of absolute alcohol during pregnancy produces a 30 to 50% risk of FAS.
Characteristics of FAS are the following: Delayed development or intellectual impairment Reduced growth before and after birth Small head and eyes Thin upper lip Flat cheekbones (maxillary hypoplasia) Narrow, small eye openings (palpebral fissures) Small jaw (micrognathia) Holes between the two sides of the heart (septal defects) Decreased joint movement DO NOT DRINK DURING OR JUST BEFORE PREGNANCY.
