WAHMThe fetal pole is a mass of fetal cells (the fetus in a somite, or embryonic, state), near but separate from the yolk sac. It first becomes apparent on transvaginal ultrasound just after six weeks' gestation. Usually rhythmic fetal cardiac movement can be identified within the fetal pole on ultrasound, although it may need to grow several mm before this is apparent. The fetal pole grows at a rate of about 1 mm a day, starting at week six.
