WAHMLEEP stands for loop electrosurgical excision procedure. Usually done in the doctor's office on an outpatient basis, LEEP is used to remove abnormal cells from the cervix. Abnormal cells, often called cervical dysplasia, can be detected with a Pap smear.
The "loop" part of LEEP is a thin wire loop at the end of a tool, through which runs an electric current. It is used transvaginally, in other words, through a speculum inserted in the vagina, much like with a Pap smear. The loop acts as a scalpel that can cut away a thin layer of the surface cells. The cells are sent to a lab for analysis.
