WAHMA person who assists the mother during childbirth. A midwife can be a man or woman. Today, midwifes are usually nurse-midwifes, meaning they have had formal training as nurses and then pursue specialized training in midwifery. If you chose to use a midwife make sure he or she is certified and that you have a backup plan should something go wrong and you or your baby need immediate medical or surgical intervention.
