Registered nurses who are qualified through additional training to provide certain aspects of a baby’s medical care. They often transport critically ill infants, attend high-risk deliveries and perform procedures in the NICU (placement of breathing tubes, special intravenous lines, etc.). In many NICUs they also take responsibility for primary management of sick newborns. They are supervised by a doctor, usually a neonatologist.
